I've been told that there's a disease that comes of loving yourself too much, to the point that it interferes with day to day living. Narcissism, from the Narcissus flower, which began as a tale from Hellenistic Greece. This one tells of a proud and unfeeling man who spurns his male suitors, until one such youth kills himself on the man's doorstep and curses him to fall in love with himself. The tale is, of course, retold in a more heterosexual version, until it twisted and unfolded into the vaguely defined, utterly unconnected disease of today. I have to say I rather like the original, for all its drama and ridiculousness. It's not a man's duty to pander to those who love him if he truly does not love them in return; and a curse born out of jealousy? It's never true love that the lover turns their hatred onto the lovee. That is simply reaching out and longing to be loved for a lack of love, from a loneliness that everyone feels.

Perhaps it's that I wasn't born into the world alone, but I have never felt it, for I'm content in my skin and with myself. And if that is Narcissism, so be it, but I shall not be alone.
